February Event

This event found us meeting at Ryan’s instead of The Old South as planned. We hope no one got confused and missed out on finding us. It was a good day for ducks (raining) and we had a much smaller group, but with nonstop talking we all enjoyed seeing each other. Those in attendance were:  Jane (Bailey) Barnhouse, Erma (Duryea) Cotton, Linda (Goodwin) Griffin , Gene Rackley, Charles Hill, Sue (Rider) and Bill Luce, and Shirley (Duvall) and Rick Harrison.   Shirley won the door prize, a cuddly stuffed floppy black puppy with red hearts, appropriately named ‘Cyclone’.  It was also her birthday.

Our next event has been scheduled for Saturday, June 28. No location or time as yet.   Feel free to offer your suggestions.

Ben Trusty reports that after being happily retired for over 7 years, last summer he was offered a part time consulting job, consisting of managing engineering for modifications to a small chemical plant in El Dorado.  He took the job, and after getting over the shock of doing most everything on the computer he found it was a lot of fun and an ego trip to be doing this at his age.  That job is winding down now, but a friend has asked him to do consulting for a chemical plant in Mississippi. This job looks like it will turn into an ongoing effort and is even more fun. However, all work will be put aside in mid -

June when his ‘clan’ (10 of them) will be taking an inside passage cruise to Alaska in celebration of his 70th birthday.

Ray Hackworth is having knee surgery at UAMS in Little Rock .  One knee will be done Thursday, April 3 and the other knee will be done on Friday, April 4. If all goes well, he hopes to go home on Sunday.  Ray and Bev went to Jamaica in October and are going on a cruise to the Caribbean the week before his surgery. With them will be their daughter, her husband, and her husband’s parents.  Bev’s sister will stay with their mom while they are on the cruise and daughter Suzanne will takeover while Ray is in the hospital.

Larry and Lois Woodward are planning to take a cruise to Alaska in May to celebrate their upcoming 50th wedding anniversary.  They plan to also visit Lois’ sister in Yakama, WA when they get back to Seattle and to visit their daughter and her family near Kansas City on their way back to Florida.

Love those cruises! I know they all will have a great time.  I’m looking forward to being able to take a trip to Myrtle Beach, SC the last week of April.  We’ll fly into Wilmington, NC and drive down the coast.  I’m also hoping to be able to attend my grandson’s graduation in mid June.  I’ll be missing Family Day while in Myrtle Beach.  Payton joined the Army and left February 13, 4 days before his 20th birthday.  He is in training at Fort Knox, KY with thoughts of becoming a scout.

Pat (Crouch) Murphy had a mini stroke last August.  Now, looking for something to do, she went to Council On Aging to volunteer and was offered a job answering the phone.  First she had to have surgery on  three fingers, wrist, and left shoulder to repair injuries caused from an accident when three football players ran into her while she was still employed at Bay High School.  But she says “Life is good.”

Gene Rackley has been helping his dad   settle in at Wildflower Retirement home in Russellville .

Marion (Benson) Munsinger reports that her sister is now in a retirement home.

Nancy (Grimes) Bostian’s sister, Betty Grimes Lyons passed away on March 7. After losing her brother, Roy, in November it has been a rough few months for her.  She says she does appreciate the care and concern from friends and loved ones.  She also reports that their 7th grandchild born last May along with their other grandchildren are a reminder of the many blessings they constantly receive.

Dalene Davenport Horton has written a great article about her experiences in Turkey during 1962-1963 when as a young military wife she was employed by the Tumpane Company.  Please read this article at the following website: merhabaturkey.com/1HORTONDindex.html

I received a call from Hoyt Linker on January 19, the day after his birthday.  Our little newsletter finally nudged him into getting in touch and we had a nice visit.  Hoyt says he and his wife, Treva, have 140 acres with a pond near the Missouri border and he raises cattle which keep him very busy.  He retired after 35 years with Wonder Bread in Little Rock, has 3 sons and 4 grandchildren.

Wilma (Humphrey) and Sam McBride celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary as well as Christmas with their two daughters and families. It was the first time they were all together in many years.  Daughter Terri lives in Houston and daughter Jan lives in San Francisco; and there are 4 grand-daughters ages 11-18.  (Eldest is currently choosing a college.)  All had a wonderful time at a lovely luncheon at the Savoy, then at an informal reception at home where they shared early times and viewed pictures.

When an officer pulled over an elderly motorist for speeding, he found something he’d never seen before.  When asked why there was a vacuum cleaner whirring away on the dashboard, the driver said it was her grandchildren’s idea.  “They told me if I put a Dust Buster in my car, I wouldn’t get a ticket.”

HAVE A GREAT DAY!    Jane
