JUNE PICNIC

It was a rather warm day but there was an occasional cool breeze and we had a very nice view of the river for our picnic. Nine classmates and five spouses enjoyed a good time just being together.  There was plenty of talk, food, and picture taking. If your ears burned, you know why. We were particularly glad that Betty Ashmore Moore and her husband, Jim, came down from Fayetteville as we had not located her before the 50th reunion events.

LtoR: Erma Duryea Cotton, Linda Goodwin Griffin; Jane Bailey Barnhouse; Betty Ashmore Moore, Virginia Morris Proctor, Shirley DuVall Harrison; Gwen Parker Bewley; Ray Hackworth, Burlin Luningham.

NEXT EVENT

Mark your calendars right now that our October event will be Saturday, October 13.  We will have a room reserved at The Old South Restaurant for lunch beginning at 12:00.  Go Dutch!!  The RHS Homecoming is on Friday, October 12 and we felt there might be some classmates who would want to be in town for that as well.  Just make your hotel reservations ASAP.  A reminder will be sent out closer to that date.

  TIDBITS from our classmates

Elizabeth Ruth Carter graduated from Tulane Law School on May 19th.  At the ceremony where she received the Juris Doctor degree as well as a certificate of Civil Law, she was inducted into the Tulane Law School chapter of the Order of the Coif.  She also received the Dean Rufus C. Harris Civil Law Award for the Best Writing on a Civil Law Subject, Tulane Law Review Volume 81, and the 2007 Louisiana State Bar Association Civil Law Studies Award.

She graduated Magna Cum Laude, and  will be joining the law firm of Lugenbuhl, Wheaton, Peck, Rankin and Hubbard of   New OrleansElizabeth is the daughter of Drs. Michael and Sarah (Jennings-Class-58) Carter of Tumbling Shoals. And niece of our own John Jennings.

John and LaVerne also had their first ‘kid’ on Friday, April 27.  It was a beautiful 10# girl

named Flopsey by the great-grandchildren.  Thus begins the herd.

Dalene Davenport Horton passed along some wonderful news regarding Mary Gale Bullock Barnes who has been quite ill.  Dalene says “Mary Gale looks great and has a head-full of beautiful auburn hair, and is as lovely as she was 50 years ago.”  Dalene and Sam visited her in May in Houston and took Mary Gale some photos from the reunion.

Jackie Mayhan Brooks’ 47-year-old daughter graduated with a 4.0 GPA from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro with  a degree in Animal Science with minors in Chemistry and Biology. She has received acceptance letters from Louisiana State University, Mississippi State University and Oklahoma State University to their School of Veterinary Medicine and has chosen to attend LSU. The Vet program requires 4 years.  She plans to focus on small ruminant animals, specifically goats (take notice John).

Jackie and Don are expecting their first biological great-grandchild (a girl). They  have a great-grandson, now 7-years old, who joined the family with his mother when she married their grandson.

Martha Braden Reid’s son suffered a stroke in June.  He apparently was doing well, then regressed but on June 13 Martha sent an e-mail saying that Mike was so much better that no rehab would take him because social security declines to pay for less than 6 months rehab.  She says, “We wanted him to get better so look what happens now.”  He and his family are currently with Martha and he is walking, talking and doing most anything he wants.  He is receiving physical and speech therapy and she calls him her ‘walking miracle.’  They will be returning to their home in Jacksonville, FL soon. Martha says “Thanks to everyone for their prayers but please continue.”

Gwen Parker Bewley’s husband, Cleete, received a bad report on both lungs and the doctor is trying to decide whether to give him the medication he really needs.  He took this medication before and it caused a stroke. (Update:  Cleete is to restart Avastin Thursday, July 5.)

CLASS MEMORIALS

June Bowden Bagley on April 29. June had knee replacement surgery on April 10 and went to rehab, but was immediately sent to ICU. She had developed ARDS (Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome) from Aspiration Pneumonia.
